Mote Selected for Carbon Negative Shot Award

$7 Million Pilot Project Includes Partnership with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to Apply Mote’s Patented BiCRS Technology, Accelerate Company’s Growth Plan

October 21, 2024 (Los Angeles, CA) – Mote, Inc. (“Mote,” “the Company”) announces that it has been selected as one of the largest winners of the Department of Energy’s Carbon Negative Shot challenge. The program will award Mote $7 million in support of a pilot plant utilizing Mote’s technology, in collaboration with experts from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, which brings over three decades of experience in biomass gasification to the project.

“Mote’s win is a meaningful confirmation of our innovative yet mature BiCRS approach, and this pilot with NREL will give us valuable information to refine operational strategies and head off risks in future development,” said Dr. Josh Stolaroff, CEO of Mote. “Not only will we apply the experience from building and operating this pilot to our pending commercial plant, but we can continue to use this plant to test and implement future breakthroughs for our next-generation plants.”

The end-to-end pilot plant is expected to operate at least a year ahead of the first planned commercial plant, yielding operational experience and de-risking for the larger project. The commercial project, near Bakersfield, CA, is substantially supported by the California Hydrogen Hub and has received Letters of Intent or term sheets to date for up to $3 billion in future revenue.

DOE’s Carbon Negative Shot challenge is a call for innovation and development of technologies to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at a cost below $100 per metric ton, with funding available through grant-like pilot programs to support research and development. It aims to advance carbon removal technologies across various pathways. Mote was one of two winning companies employing BiCRS technology to solve the challenge. A detailed list of winners of the $100 million challenge can be found here.

Mote, Inc. turns agricultural and wood waste into hydrogen and carbon removal with a uniquely-integrated gasification process. Mote’s patented process is a new application of proven components, spun out of work at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The current award selection follows a strong record of support from agencies and expert groups including DOE, CalFire, the California Department ofConservation, the US Forest Service, and Mission Possible Partnership.
